The exhibit items come mainly from what a family in the San Jose area has kept for over 100 years despite having lost ties with the succeeding immigrant organizations that have arrived in California. The significance of the materials made available for modern Assyrian studies is marked by the tour of the exhibit to American and possibly international venues.

From Qarajalu to Santa Clara Department of History, University of Washington (Seattle, WA), December 7-9, 2022.

While the initial costs of the exhibit came from the Assyrian Foundation of America, the NFAFC continues to fund parts of the traveling exhibit, especially any accompanying lectures. A schedule of travel will be posted here and on the exhibit website.

The exhibit focuses on a single family, Joseph/Yuseff, from the Urmia village of Qarajalu, an Assyrian/Armenian populated village located between Urmia and Salamas. A cache of about 150 letters received provide a window into how Assyrians viewed events from 1887 to 1923. The correspondence will be archived at UC Berkeley. As it tours, the exhibit title has been changed to Assyrians from Persian (Iran) to the United States, 1887-1923: Assyrian Education, American Missionaries and the Search for a Home.

A catalogue of the exhibit is available for purchase ($25) from the exhibit website.
